Frank C. Mars came up with the idea for M&Ms candy in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War after witnessing soldiers eating unusual chocolate pellets. Unlike normal chocolate, these had a hard outer shell surrounding the inside, which prevented the candies from melting. He thought this was a brilliant idea, and went on to patent his own version of the treats, which came to be called M&Ms.
